A variety of Jewish groups are offering educational and recreational online resources. Below is a sampling of those. The Reporter will publish additional listings as they become available. 

Dean Emeritus Dr. David I. Bernstein of the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studieswill lead a virtual tour of Har Herzl (the cemetery on Mt. Herzl) and discussion on the multiple identities found within the Jewish state on Tuesday, April 25, at noon. For more information or to register, click here.

Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion will hold several webinars: Tuesday, April 25, at 1 pm, “The Crisis of Democracy and the Attractions of Authoritarianism” with speakers Anne Applebaum, Jedediah Purdy and Andrew Rehfeld, Ph.D; Tuesday, May 2, at 2 pm, “Art and Protest” with speakers Dorit Jordan Dotan, Lloyd Wolf and Jean Bloch Rosensaft; and Tuesday, May 9, at 1 pm, “Exploration of the Oxford Annotated Mishnah” with speakers Rabbi Dalia Marx, Ph.D., Rabbi Dvora Weisberg, Ph.D. and Andrew Rehfeld, Ph.D. To register for the events, click here.

Maven will hold two virtual book talks: “People of the Word: Fifty Words that Shaped Jewish Thinking” on Tuesday, May 2, from 3-3:45 pm, with authors Rabbis Zalman Abraham and Mendel Kalmenson (available here); and “The American Way: Nazi Escape, Superman, and Marilyn Monroe” on Thursday, May 4, from 3-3:45 with authors Helene Stapinksi and Bonnie Siegler (available here).

Qesher will hold a variety of virtual tours, including “Jewish Tunisia: at a crossroads of civilizations” on Thursday, April 27, at noon; “The Jews of Scandinavia: A Virtual Tour of Norway and Sweden” on Sunday, April 30, at noon; “Jewish Amsterdam: A Small Community with a Giant History” on Thursday, May 4, at noon; “Vilnius: The Jerusalem of Lithuania and the city of my family” on Sunday, May 7, at noon; “The 3K Virtual Tour of Jewish Lithuania: Kaunas, Kedainiai and Kalvarija” on Thursday, May 11, at noon; “Remember Baghdad” on Sunday, May 14, at noon; “Sefarad: Music of the Jews of Spain, Portugal and their diaspora” on Thursday, May 18, at noon; “‘Streets of Kazimierz’: The History of Krakow’s Jewish Quarter” on Sunday, May 21, at noon; and “Music among the Crypto-Jews of Portugal: An almost vanished world” on Wednesday, May 24, at noon. Qesher Book Club will hold a discussion of the book “Worlds Apart” with Nadia Ragozhina discussing the journeys of her Jewish family in 20th century Europe on Tuesday, May 2, at noon. Siegal Lifelong Learning will hold the virtual program “The New New Hebrew: Contemporary Trends in Israeli Culture” with Melissa Weininger, assistant professor of Jewish studies, California State University, Northridge, on Wednesday, May 10, from 7-8:30 pm. Literary Modiin will hold its virtual May author event on Sunday, May 21, at 1 pm. It will feature authors Aaron Hamburger, Judy Labensohn Lev and Jonathan Papernick discussing their most recent work. For more information or to register, click here.

The Museum at Eldridge Street will hold the virtual seminar “Jewish Life in Poland-Lithuania: A Seminar with Zachary Mazur” on Sunday, April 30, at 2 pm. The seminar will look at a 1000 years of the history of Jews in Poland from the Middle Ages to the present day. For more information or to register, click here.

The Jewish Council will hold the virtual program “A Global Literary Conversation: On Artists in Captivity” with Simon Parkin and Susan Wider on Thursday, May 4, from 1-2 pm. They will discussing their award-winning books – “The Island of Extraordinary Captives: A Painter, a Poet, an Heiress, and a Spy in a World War II British Internment Camp” and “It’s My Whole Life: Charlotte Salomon: An Artist in Hiding During World War II” – and the role of Jewish artists in the Holocaust. Uri L’Tzedek will hold the virtual program “Jews and Humanity: Evolution of a Conversation” with Rabbi Daniel Raphael Silverstein on Monday, May 15, at 1 pm.
