TI/TC to participate in annual Global Day of Jewish Learning on Nov. 17

This year’s Global Day of Jewish Learning will be held on Sunday, November 17, from 10 am-noon, at Temple Israel. This has been an annual event since 2010, commemorating the 45-year effort of Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz to translate the Talmud into English. Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell of Temple Concord and Rabbi Geoffrey Brown of Temple Israel will be initiating a joint program for the Binghamton area, to be held at Temple Israel. As indicated in the title, this is a worldwide event with multiple learning sites in numerous countries all occurring on the same day. The programs are intended to be accessible to all regardless of level of Jewish education or knowledge of Hebrew.
The theme for this year is “Speaking Volumes” and the locally selected topic is “Not One Empty Word.” “The Bible is a book that speaks volumes through the ongoing act of interpretation known as midrash,” said organizers. “How do those interpretations affect our understanding of the source texts, and what is our role in that tradition?”
The program is being held under the auspices of the joint Temple Concord/Temple Israel Adult Education Committee. There will be a brunch at the beginning of the program, with a $5 fee. RSVP to Tammy at Temple Israel at 723-7461 or titammy@stny.twcbc.com.
